Down in the winter woods - Manjimup - Western Australia

 Hi everyone, I hope life is treating you and yours well. It has been cold and wet here the last few weeks, which has given me more time for other things including my photo book from our recent holiday. 

I am doing a little sidestep this week away from my Across Australia series - don't worry I will be back with the next enstallment next time. 

However I wanted to share some photos I took recently on a photography group day out with another photography group in Manjimup, Western Australia. We went looking for fungi in Foresters Wood and Four Aces near Manjimup. It has been a yearly catchup. It was very damp underfoot - perfect for fungi. Thankyou Manjimup for the great day out! 

I didn't take my tripod (I find it so restrictive), so upped the ISO so I could take photos handheld with my macro lens. I was reasonably happy with the results. 

Life in minature - 

I think this one needs a fairy or an elf sitting on top - not a native species and highly toxic! 

Life on the log

Not just fungi ....

Below is - Paraserianthes lophantha - commonly known as Cape Leeuwin Wattle or Crested Wattle - it is the only species occurring in south-west Western Australia; the other is found in tropical Australia. Australian National Herbarium. It is very different to the usual Australian wattles which come from the Acacia family. 

Last time we visited Four Aces in 2024 we saw this Spotted Pardalote pair - female on the left, male on the right. Thanks to my husband for the bird photos. 

This time we could hear them way up in the trees, but didn't see any on the ground. 

We also recently went searching in our local nature reserve for the tiny Helmet Orchids (Corybas) which are usually starting to appear in the leaf litter this time of year. I think we might have been a little early, but we did find one group.

If you are lucy you might see and kangaroo or a red tailed black cockatoo

Catching up on my photo a day project - 13 July to 26 July

Hi everyone, I hope you and yours are getting along ok.
Time has gotten away from me, so just a quick post today to catch up on my photo a day project, which I started in March at the beginning of the Covid crisis. I certainly didn't expect to still be doing it now. The future is such a worry it is nice to have something else to focus on. Have you a Covid project? Perhaps you would like to tell us about it in your comments.

Covid cases are still on a worrying upward trend in the south east Australian state, Victoria, particularly and tragically in nursing homes. It shows how quickly it can spread from one infection, or one person doing the wrong thing. It is up to all of us if we want to beat this thing.

I am worried about how long the virus pandemic will go on for, how many more people it will affect, and when cases will return to Western Australia, which I believe is inevitable, but for now I need to remind myself that I have much to be thankful for in my world, and to tell the people I love that I love them.

A week in winter

Hi everyone, the last few days have disappeared as we have been hunkering down away from the wild storms that have lashed our Western Australian coastline. Lucky for us we haven't sustained any damage around our property, though there was a very sleepless night on Sunday as I lay in bed and listened to everything rattling. We really need the rain, especially in the agricultural regions, and now that winter is on it's way it has suddenly turned cold, so the fire has been on every night.

So I don't know if it was that, or what, as we haven't had any "appointments" the last 3 days, but I forgot about my blog on Monday. So thought I'd better do something about it. 

In the meantime however, Covid cases in Western Australia have thankfully remain low, I have been starting to get out for some short walks which have been lovely, and playing around more with my eco printing. 

So here is this week's collage for my photo-a-day project -

 Monday - 18 May 2020 - we went down to the Balingup Tree Park for the day. It truly is beautiful this year with the colours of the autumn leaves from trees planted from around the world. 
I've blogged about it several times - last time was last year - Autumn colour in Western Australia

 Tuesday - 19 May 2020 - laying out some of those autumn leaves on paper for botanical eco-printing. This is Red Maple.

 Wednesday - 20 May 2020 - Tonight I did two zoom meetings, one a photography workshop and the other a catch up with my Spanish dancing group. It seems to be the new normal these days.

 Thursday - 21 May 2020 - beautiful red flowering gum tree on our afternoon walk.

 Friday - 22 May 2020 - playing with dyeing natural Eri silk thread with colours made from leaves, flowers and bark.

Saturday - 23 May 2020 - leaves of the Sea Urchin Hakea - Hakea petiolaris

 Sunday - 24 May 2020 - fresh quinces and granny smith apples bought from a grower from the Boyanup farmer's market.
