From a writing prompt - Spanish Tango - Granada Spain

Something a little different this week - a creative writing piece - using a photo as a writing prompt.

Sometimes the simplest of photos can be a source of inspiration. Observe the details. How does it make you feel? Use your senses. What is happening in the background? Start writing.

I belong to a writer's group - The South Side Quills. We meet once a month in our town Library. Each month we are set a writing prompt to write from at home for our next meeting. You don't have to stick entirely to the given prompt, as long as it has elements from it. A couple of months ago we were given this prompt -

He caught her eye. They looked at each other from across the space. He, sitting on the top step of the old post office building, a shopping bag beside him. She, standing still watching him as he held his palm open, grain dripping, to the crowd of pigeons at his feet.

The photo at the top of this blog post I took in Granada in Spain several years ago. On our way to dinner we watched this couple doing a Tango in the plaza. It was mesmerising. I combined this image with the writing prompt we were given and below is what I wrote.

I also entered the photo in my photography group monthly topic - "Candid" - and I earned a silver. The judge said what made the photo was the couple watching on the right hand side...... And yes he is right.

The Tango

He catches your eye across the square. He’s sitting on the edge of the wall surrounding the fountain, a shopping bag beside him. He stirs his hand around inside a paper bag, and takes out a handful of grain which he holds out on his open palm. It drips slowly through his fingers to the crowd of pigeons clustering in a flurry of feathers at his feet. They know him. He is here every day.

The heat of summer and the aroma of baguettes and oranges fills the air – intoxicating.

The beat of a Spanish Argentinian Tango filters across the plaza. A couple are dancing. They feel the music through their bodies as it echoes around the plaza. She in a low back bright red dress. Camel coloured heels. A long side split reveals her shapely legs. Silver clips hold back her shoulder length blond hair.

He in a black suit, ruffled hair, a short cropped beard and battered shoes. His right arm and hand across her back securely holds her as they twist and turn their hips and bodies, their legs entwining. He guides her smoothly across the pavement where a black fedora rests upside down waiting.

Their dance is exotic, sensual, a dance of intimacy. Their faces at once a look of concentration and passion. Their movement and the music attracts onlookers walking across the plaza.

Nearby a couple have stopped to watch. Their shopping forgotten as he holds his partner close to him, in an embrace. They watch, mesmerised. He whispers in her ear. She smiles. In their hearts they want to be the dancing couple.

And you? You watch them watching the couple dancing. You watch the man feeding the pigeons. You and he have history. A long ago slow dance.

Here are a few more candid shots. I don't really do street photography - I feel like I am invading privacy. I feel visible with my camera. But for some reason when I am overseas it comes more easily. Perhaps because I am a tourist. Each of these photos tell a story. They can be a great resource for writing prompts.

There are a number of resources on the net about using pictures as writing prompts. Here is one - www.photory.app/blogs/writing-from-picture-prompts

Where did February Go?

Oh my goodness - February has gone in a blur - where did it go? Here today, gone tomorrow. I hope you and yours are doing well in these troubled times.

It looks like I have been busy during February.

3rd February my husband and I were in the on-water control boat during an afternoon dragon boat regatta for our club, the Forza Dragon Boat Club, in Bunbury. The event was well supported by clubs from Perth, Mandurah and Albany. It is a colourful spectical on the water and land.

That is Forza in the blue and red in the second photo below here. One of my sons is second from the front in this boat.

It is always a good opportunity for me to take photos

Last weekend my photography group assisted the Bunbury Triathlon Club by taking photos for their big annual competition. I was located on the bike leg  along the beach. It was a great opportunity to practise panning. I was glad for the cloud cover on the day.

I've previously blogged about Taking photos at a sports event - but when I photographed the dragon boat regatta and the bike riders at the Triathlon this year I put my camera in Sports mode - it worked well for me.

Late yesterday afternoon I was again with my photography group taking photos for the South West Multicultural Festival. I always enjoy going along to this, enjoying the cultural displays, dances and food. It is always a great evening. In the past I have danced at this with Sol y Sombra Spanish Dance Company. This year our Principal, Nicole, performed solo. She is always a joy to watch.
Sol y Sombra have been a part of the Bunbury dance scene for over 33 years.

Below clockwise from top left you can see an elder playing the didgeridoo as part of the Welcome to Country, two Indonesian dancers, a dancer from Brazil (their costumes were amazing, Filipino Folk Singers, Ukranian Cossack Dancers, and an Indian Dancer.

The Ukranian Cossack Dancers were amazing. The girls were so pretty in their costumes, flowers and ribbons, and my goodness these guys are fit, agile, energetic, and fantastic to watch. They look like they are having a LOT of fun!

In between all this I have been getting things done in preparation for my next market at the Tree Street Art Safari in March, and also working on my photo book from our nine week Queensland trip last year. It was my plan to get it done over the summer - and I have! I sent it off to the printers this week.

That's it from me today. I pray for those in war torn countries around the world and hope the leaders can sit down and find a way to peace.

Celebrating Diwali - the Festival of Light

On Saturday I had the opportunity to attend Diwali - the Festival of Light - presented by the South West Indian Group in Bunbury in Western Australia's south west. I was there as a member of Sol y Sombra Spanish Dance Company who had been invited to perform. It was a fabulous evening of entertainment, culture, colour, music, vibrancy and energy, plus delicious food from Spice Journey.  The Bollywood theme was highly featured and enjoyed by the audience.

So today I am sharing some of the photos I took. Please excuse the quality as I was using a zoom lens in low light, I had to increase the ISO so I could hand hold my camera, and we were sitting about half way back in a packed room of guests, but I am sure the photos will give you an idea of the vibrancy of the performances. Unfortunately I don't have any images of our dance!

(From Wikipedia): Diwali is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs and some Buddhists to mark different historical events and stories but they all symbolise the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, hope over despair.

The mythical stories told for Diwali vary regionally and within the traditions of Hinduism. Yet, they all point to joy and the celebration of Diwali with lights to be a reminder of the importance of knowledge, self inquiry, self-improvement, knowing and seeking the good and the right path. It is a metaphor for resisting evil, for dispelling darkness and for compassion to others. Diwali is the celebration of this inner light over spiritual darkness, of knowledge over ignorance and right over wrong. It is a festive restatement of the Hindu belief that the good ultimately triumphs over evil.

Sol y Sombra performed a flamenco version of Ravel's Bolero at Diwali. This dance was choreographed for our 25th anniversary show in 2015, and was rechoreographed for the Eisteddfod in June where we won our section - the Over 25s Theatrical Dance. We were invited back to dance at the Eisteddfod Gala night, which was a great honour. It was great to be performing this piece again, this time at Diwali.

South West Multicultural Festival night under the stars 2016

Last Saturday a huge crowd were treated to the South West Multicultural Festival - a free night of entertainment under the stars at the Bunbury Music Shell.  Many different nationalities came together to celebrate and showcase their cultures through music and dance.

This event has been a highlight of the region’s calendar since 2005 and again this year we enjoyed a vibrant evening of entertainment which included guest artists from Perth as well as local groups.  A barmy summer night, the weather couldn't have been more perfect.

Events were held during the day included tai-chi, cooking demonstrations, craft displays, fashion parade, sport, talks, and stalls. People were also treated to fabulous tastes through the Food Truck Safari.

Ole - a celebration of 25 years of Flamenco in south west regional Western Australia

In 2012  I started lessons in Flamenco encouraged by my daughter-in-law who had been a member of Sol y Sombra Spanish Dance Company and School of Dance for over 10 years.

On Saturday night, 12 September, I was privileged to be a part - both as dancer and photographer - of "Ole" a celebration of 25 years of Flamenco dancing in regional south west Western Australia.

The Eliot Street Bar in Bunbury was transformed into a Spanish Taverna when Bunbury’s Sol y Sombra Spanish Dance Company celebrated 25 years of local South West flamenco dancing bringing the heat and passion of Spain alive to a packed and very appreciative audience.

Sol y Sombra Spanish Dance Company

Last year I  started Spanish Flamenco dance lessons at the Sol y Sombra Spanish Company & School of Dance - a group of dancers with ages ranging from early 30s to 70 who love to dance. On Saturday night, along with other cultural groups, we performed at the free family concert at the Bunbury Multicultural Festival (Western Australia). The Multicultural group is a wonderful supporter for people of other nationalities coming to live and work in our city and the night is a fabulous evening of entertainment which showcases the diverse multi-cultural environment in which we live.  I love hearing the music and seeing the dances of other nationalities.

I danced in one of the three dances that Sol y Sombra performed. It was my first full scale public performance. Flamenco is certainly not easy to learn and I sincerely thank the ladies and gent at Sol y Sombra for their amazing support to me as a newbie dancer. Sol y Sombra put on a fantastic  performance of three different types of Flamenco styles which were well received by the crowd.                               'Fantastico'

When I was a child I wished I could go to ballet and tap classes like my friend Anna. And now many years later I am going to dance classes. Sometimes it takes a while to get the things you wish for.
Here we are at dance class in the dance room at the Bunbury Regional Art Gallery -

Below are two mosaics of images from rehearsal last week when we were practising on the stage where we performed - that is my teacher Nicole in the second set of images. And yes Pete does dress up for the performance. The red lace skirts and gold collars are stunning.

All these images were taken with manual settings on my camera - another new skill I have just started to learn!

Below is an image from Saturday night. When my teacher saw the pic on Facebook she asked me how I managed to get a camera on stage. LOL. This pic was taken during the first dance which I wasn't a part of - the Overture from Carmen - very dramatic. I was sitting on stage as one of the "cafe" people stage props. Tricky to get a snap when you are trying to not be noticed doing so!

And a quote from Ruth Tearle -

"Harmony is about being with people who play your kind of tune".

Have you taking up a new skill this past year? Do you like to dance?
Thank you for stopping by. I hope you have enjoyed this little look into dance practise. I look forward to hearing from you.

Weekend of lunch, gardens, music & dance

What a wonderful weekend we have had -

Lunch in the cappuccino strip in Bunbury.  There is a variety of restaurants, some of which are housed in lovely old buildings. Trees which are lit up at night with fairly lights, line the street. It really is a lovely place to go for coffee or lunch.  There is a variety of restaurants - you can go from a simple sandwich to Chinese to pizza to fish and chips to a top class Italian restaurant. Take away, dine in, tables along the footpath, and the cakes are devine! and the people watching - the place to be seen. The cappuccino strip certainly has a lovely feel about it. It is a great place to go and meet up with friends, or just go for a stroll!

On Sunday we went to the 16th Annual Nannup Flower and garden festival - They have had 4 days of garden and floral displays, quilt & craft displays, stalls, art  exhibitions, choir singing, workshops and entertainment.  As you can see in the collage below it is tulip time. I love the "beetle" car covered in grass and run by solar power! And I might have to dig out some old boots and plant flowers in them!

And a beautiful quote from Buddha on the display from the high school -

"The perfume of flowers travel only as far as the wind
but the fragrance of goodness travels throughout all worlds
The garlands woven from a heap of flowers
fashion your life as a garland of beautiful deeds"

On Sunday late afternoon-evening a friend and I went to "Concert and Cocktails" at the Koombana Bay yacht club.
This was a fund raising event for the Stirling Street Arts Centre, going towards renovations and additions to their facility.
It was a wonderful evening. Performing were the South West Opera Company (with songs from Carmen), South West Philharmonic Orchestra, Bunbury Musical Comedy Group (with songs from Fiddler on the Roof), Bunbury Catholic College Girls Choir (with songs from the Beetles and the 60s), Bunbury City Band and South West Jazz Enzemble, and a crowd favourite, the Soly Sombra Spanish Dancers.

In the mosaic below in second from bottom left, and on the far right of the top right photo, you can see my daughter in law in the bluish gypsy dress.  Don't they all look so beautiful dressed in their gypsy costumes? I joined the dance group earlier this year, and my teacher says next year I will be dancing..... I don't now about that.......

Flamenco!

Planta, Tacón, Talón, Gólpe, Punto, Taconeo - are all Flamenco dance steps terminology - which put together create the stamping toe and heel footwork that is typically Flamenco - a vibrant powerful passionate and seductive dance style - the essence of Spain.

Flamenco dance has been  burning in Andalucía for nearly five hundred years. It is a a land where music and dance is just part of everyday life, and the Andalucians express themselves beautifully with the dance, and especially with the flamenco dance.  Andalucía burns with life, colour, and romance. It is a place of music and dancing, of plucked guitar strings, and the snapping of fingers, clicking castanets, and the stamping of feet, all of which mould together to create this wonderful culture we know as flamenco.
