It is summer here in Australia. School is nearly finished and the summer holidays are nearly here.
I found this poem in an old poetry book - and I liked the images it provoked. So I put together a few photos and created a mosaic to share with the poem with you.....
ps - there are no capitals because that's how it was in the book -
"maggie and milly and molly and may"
By EE Cummings
maggie and milly and molly and may
went down to the beach (to play one day)
and maggie discovered a shell that sang
so sweetly she couldn’t remember her troubles, and
milly befriended a stranded star
whose rays five languid fingers were;
and molly was chased by a horrible thing
which raced sideways while blowing bubbles; and
may came home with a smooth round stone
as small as a world and as large as alone.
For whatever we lose (like a you or a me)
It’s always ourselves we find in the sea
(from the poetry book – The Charge of the Light Brigade and other story poems – Scholastic Book Services, 1969)

Thanks for this wonderful poem and for your lovely images to go with it.
ReplyDeleteHappy summer!
It is cold and windy here at our beaches so it was nice to see your photos!
ReplyDeleteLovely beach photos Jill and I also loved the poem. My December is looking fairly cruisy. Just made my Christmas pudding on the weekend and have done most of my shopping. Christmas lunch is at my brother's house in Currumbin Valley so not much for me to do except take the pudding and make a salad. We are heading off on an Asian cruise in the New Year.
ReplyDeletesounds like a lovely time is planned Kathy. enjoy.
DeleteWhat a great selection of images, Jill! I love the poem you have chosen to go with them. The beach is my favourite place. In Brisbane, our Spring was extremely hot and humid so we are in for a very hot and humid summer. We will be travelling "home" to Melbourne's Mornington Peninsula for 2 1/2 weeks over Christmas and New Year to celebrate my parent's 60th Wedding Anniversary.
ReplyDeleteHello Jill, I just loved this post and the cute poem! The photos are just perfect too. We are enjoying a mild December so far, I love it. Happy Monday, enjoy your new week!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for linking in with "Through My Lens"

A lovely poem and sights of summer. I especially like the starfish.
ReplyDeleteOur winter is very different so far thanks to El Nino. Temperatures in the mid 50s when it should be below freezing with lots of snow. If it does turn cold without the insulation of snow I'm going to lose a lot of plants.
I love that underwater shot! Which camera did you use?
ReplyDeleteI just use my small Canon G11 in an underwater housing. Nothing flash. Shallow water off the beach at Coral Bay is perfect as the sunlight lights up what you are trying to photograph underwater.
DeleteAbsolutely beautiful! I love the poem and you illustrated it so beautifully!
ReplyDeleteHave a happy, wonderful summer! Just love your beach and ocean images!
ReplyDeleteA lovely photo poem and gorgeous pics. Kids and the beach are a match made in heaven.

The second photo is my favourite in this post. It makes me think of my own childhood days at the beach.
ReplyDeleteThe beach is always a wonderful place for surprises!
ReplyDeleteI love the underwater photo Jill, of course, I love all of them. So strange how here it is winter and there it is summer. I envy the sun!
