Tree Street Art Safari - and March is flying by!

 Hi everyone, I hope you and yours are doing well. For me February and March has been a blur, with events to photograph, as you would have seen in my last post - Photography Action and Celebrating International Women's Day - and lots of other things on the go. 

On Saturday 22nd March I was again exhibiting in Banksia Street as part of the Tree Street Art Safari in Bunbury. This is an annual event which I have been participating in since 2018. I didn't realise it had been so long. My wonderful hosts Maggie and Alex welcome me to their garden for the exhibition market every year. It really was a gift when I was teamed with them back in 2018. I really cannot thank Maggie and Alex enough for their support. I've blogged about the Art Safari before - Tree Street Art Safari 2023

The Tree Street Art Safari is a wonderful initiative and opportunity for local artists to display and sell their work. 

Residents in the beautiful leafy heritage Tree Street area of our town host artists in their gardens. This year I was there with two other artists Heidi Hall and Romminy O'Çonnor. 

I was there with my usual bits and pieces - original photography prints on paper, cushion covers, tote bags and greeting cards, botanical eco-prints on wool and silk scarves, paper, greeting cards, tote bags and upcycled tops (wearable art!), and cyanotype sun prints on paper, greeting cards and tote bags. Even hand folded paper flowers (the little girls love them) - something for everyone! 

A huge thankyou to our hosts Maggie and Alex, the Tree Street Art Safari committee, everyone who visited, it was lovely to chat with you and share my art, thankyou for your lovely comments and especially those who purchased something from me - I treasure you all. A huge thankyou for the support of my wonderful husband, without whom none of this would be possible.   

Strangely I have never taken a photo of my hosts glorious back yard - absolutely full of huge shady trees and shade loving plants - an peaceful oasis in the city. 

It has been a hectic time getting ready over the last couple of months, especially more since in 2 weekends time I will be exhibiting at the Dardanup Art Trail over the weekend of 4-5 April. At the same time I am the Secretary of the Photography Group of Bunbury - which is also keeping me busy. We would love to hitch up our caravan and go away and relax somewhere - anywhere! 

A few random photos from this last month - clock wise from top left hand corner - We visited the Dunsborough Sculpture By the Bay (sorry I didn't get to blog about it), had morning tea in Hello Duck a new cafe in Bunbury, went fishing out in Koombana Bay, checked out the beautiful Rose Hotel which has been undergoing a huge renovation, spied a gnome on our walk this morning, picked quinces from our tree this morning (yum), saw a huge flock of black swans on the Leschenault Estuary (sadly I didn't have my proper camera with me), and photographed the glorious Red capped gum - Eucalyptus erythrocorys - Illyarrie - on a walk around the Leschenault Inlet (more on that in a later blog). 

That is about it from me for now. I have lots to do before the Dardanup Art Trail in April - under 2 weeks from now! It is autumn here in Australia, but this week we are forecast to have a week in the mid to high 30s C.

Written from a writing prompt - inspired by Ukraine

Something a little different from me today, inspired by the heart-renching situation in the Ukraine. One month in from the Ukraine/Russian conflict.  I have never been to Russia or the Ukraine, so the few photos I share today are from other parts of Europe in a happier time.  I really enjoyed taking photos of balconies on our trip to Spain, Malta & Italy in 2018.

This piece I wrote the other day from my writer's group home writing prompt - 

No-one answered the door, so Tina took her mobile phone out of her pocket.

With only a backpack hastily stuffed with a change of clothes and her passport, Tina had travelled all day and all night to get here. First by train, almost empty of other passengers, then hitched a ride in the back of a truck, the weary men looking askance at her. Lastly on foot through the ravaged countryside and deserted streets, hardly recognising her surroundings since her visit last spring.

How could it be that at the end of her journey no-one was here to meet her? Tina looked again at the text message from her sister asking her to come quickly…or was it pleading? She had tried to call her sister several times since leaving home, but couldn’t get through. With each kilometre she had grown more anxious.

Tina stepped back from the heavy wooden door and looked up. Above was an iron balcony and an open door with lace curtains wafting gently in and out. She glanced up and down the street. No-one was out at this early hour but she didn’t want to draw attention to herself by calling out. A lone dog snuffled around a rubbish bin.

Tina blew her warm breath into her hands and then reached for the ornate brass door knocker. The thud echoed dully within. She waited but no-one came.

She pushed on the door and it creaked slowly open. Dry leaves scattered around her feet. Stepping cautiously inside Tina scanned the deserted courtyard strewn with dying plants and broken furniture.

A cat slunk away through an open doorway. She followed and was shocked by the disarray inside. Broken tiles and debris littered the floor and plaster hung limply from the exposed roof beams.

On the gilt framed mirror on the opposite wall was one word scrawled in lipstick or was it blood – “run”

I hope you and yours are doing well. I pray for a peaceful resolution in the Ukraine, and cry for the children and families who are suffering.

Covid photo a day project - March 2021 - final edition

 Hi everyone, I hope you and yours are doing well.

Back on 16 March 2020 I started my Covid photo-a-day project when it looked like we were going to go down into lockdown where I live and the pandemic threat started to become real. At that time I thought that it would be all over in 6 months. Sadly that wasn't to be, and over 12 months later we are still in that pandemic world. It seems that the virus keeps mutating, thousands of people around the world are becoming infected every day, and sadly thousands a day die. Sometimes I despair. The world is such an uncertain place at the moment. All I can do is hope and pray it will end soon as people are vaccinated.

Here in Australia our Government took a tough line from the very beginning, and although there has been some restrictions, mainly around numbers at venues and events, life has gone on fairly much as it usually does. Most new infected cases in Australia are people returning from overseas, and every overseas arrival has to go into mandatory 14 day isolation in a hotel. This has kept us safe. 

Now that the vaccine is being rolled out, I hope that the world will finally get on top of this terrible virus, though I fear that it will never leave us entirely. 

So, I made the decision the during this past week that I would end my Covid photo-a-day project on 31 March, 381 days from when I began last year. It has been an interesting way to document this Covid year. But I think I need to end this project and maybe start a different new project, whatever that may be. 

Therefore, here is last edition of my Covid photo-a-day project - March 2021.

Monday 1 March 2021 - We went down to Sculptures by the Bay in Dunsborough. I was particularly drawn to pieces with an environmental message. This is piece by Merle Davis has been made with plastic fishing and household rubbish washed up on our beaches.

Tuesday 2 March 2021 - plus bonus shot - the beautiful pink variety of Marri - "rosea" - Eucalyptus calophylla

Wednesday 3 March 2021 - it's been raining!

Thursday 4 March 2021 - raindrops on roses

Thursday 4 March 2021 - bonus shot - we had a lot of rain from a tropical low sweeping our state. This pic is out on my back patio garden. 

Friday 5 March 2021- on the road from Bunbury to Denmark - we lost track of how many roadworks we went through. This particular one south of Manjimup will improve the safety of the road through the forest.

Friday 5 March 2021 - bonus - a quick weekend trip to Denmark to visit my elderly aunt. This is a Swamp Bottlebrush - Beaufortia sparsa - around Walpole

Saturday 6 March 2021 - beautiful Greens Pool on the south coast near Denmark, They have upgraded the parking and access to the beach, making it easier for people to enjoy.

Sunday 7 March - Sunday - I love the soaring Karri forests in the far south around Denmark.

Monday 8 March 2021 - plus bonus shot - gorgeous red capped gum - Eucalyptus erythrocorys, - Illyarrie

Tuesday 9 March 2021 - dry karri leaves and buds picked up from the forest floor in Denmark

Wednesday 10 March 2021 - our teacher at Spanish dance class tonight

Thursday 11 March 2021 - B&W of yellow roses in my garden this morning

Friday 12 March 2021 - the bees were enjoying the chive flowers in our back garden today

Saturday 13 March 2021 - a sign of the times - are you keeping Covid safe?  In Australia we sign in at venues with a phone app or paper sign-in, and if someone becomes infected they can be traced, and anyone who has gone to that venue can be contacted.

Thursday - 18 March 2021 - sunset in my street

Friday - 19 March 2021 - first pick of this year's quinces from my garden. Delicious. 

Friday - 19 March 2021 - the beautiful home of my generous hosts in Banksia Street for the Tree Street Art Safari

Saturday - 20 March 2021 - getting set up for the Art Safari - so hot - but lots of people came through my venue and I had a fabulous day talking to people and making sales. Thank you so much to my wonderful hosts and everyone who visited. Thank you!

Sunday - 28 March 2021 - dolphin in Koombana Bay, taken with the under-water feature of my point and shoot. It came right up to our boat as soon as we dropped anchor.
