This last weekend in Western Australia we have had a Labour Day long weekend - 28 February to 2 March.
One of the events over the weekend where I live was the Multi-Cultural Festival held on Saturday evening. This is a family based free event showcasing cultural dances from around the world representing the fabulous mix of cultures who live in our region. There was also a fusion of wonderful international tastes sold at the various food stalls around the event.
I am involved with the Sol-y-Sombra Spanish Dance Company and School of Dance. This year they danced the "Fire Dance" at the festival. Below is my favourite image from the night. This is our teacher Nicole. Don't you just love the swirl of those "fire" shawls?

As I am relatively new to the group I am still learning this dance, so I wasn't involved in the production, but took photos from the sidelines - much more relaxing for me!
I enjoyed trying to capture the swirl of those skirts and shawls.
I had to fiddle around with the settings on my camera because of the low light, and I didn't want to use flash. I was happy with the results. These are all straight out of camera. I am yet to do any post production "fiddling". That will have to wait till I get my computer back. My lap top just doesn't cut it.
The make-up and hair for the performance were expertly done by Susie from our group.
Below is a pic of my daughter-in-law. She has been dancing Flamenco for about 10 years.
It was so lovely that she was happy to have her mother-in-law join the class a couple of years ago. It is something creative we can enjoy together.
Sol y Sombra is this year celebrating 25 years. They are planning a big production in September to celebrate. Lots of practicing and learning between now and then, especially for me!
I hope you have enjoyed these few images. This is just a short post today as I am still waiting for my computer to come back. I hope everything will be returned to normal next week and I'll be back with more images from the Multi-Culutral Festival.
In the meantime, thank you for stopping by.
Have a lovely week.

Hello, Jill!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing these beautiful photos full of fire!
Sounds like a very interesting festival.
Happy March!
Hello Jill, the fire dance is lovely and so are the shawls. Your DIL is a beautiful woman, they all are! Great post, thanks for sharing.. Have a happy week!
ReplyDeleteJill, these are great pictures (I especially like the first and the last one), you can see the rhythm in them and the passion. I like them a lot! Have a nice day and lots of fun in your flamenco class!
ReplyDeleteJill-these images are amazing! Thank you for stopping by my blog. You are a talented photographer!
ReplyDeleteNicole is absolutely spectacular! I love to watch professional dancers of many different genres. That is absolutely awesome on your daughter-in-law and congratulations to you as well for taking it up, Jill! I'm a horrible dancer ha, ha. But, I enjoy going out and giving it a go regardless. The colors are absolutely stunning of course perfect for it being your Autumn season in Australia. Have a great rest of your week! :)
ReplyDeleteWonderful photos!
ReplyDeleteI love dance that has fire and spirit, can't do it myself of course, but even watching gives me an energy that lasts for days.
I have a camera that has a "low-light" setting which I've used to take photos, it uses light from the surroundings so a flash isn't necessary and the photos were all pretty good, but my newer camera has different settings and night photos don't seem to work even when I set it on "night".
How exciting that you are dancing with your DIL, they would be fun times. Maybe next year we'll see you doing the fire dance Jill? Coordination and rhythm...you can do it! :-)
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking to Mosaic Monday.
Wow, these are awesome photos of the dance - great exposure in a dark setting. Love those "firey" shawls!
ReplyDeleteLovely flamenco images, Jill!
ReplyDeleteOh I can almost feel the duende of the dance in these photos! What a great activity to do with your DIL!! Sounds like great exercise as well and a lot more fun than the treadmill at the gym! Loved these photos!!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter is 10 and has been dancing Flamenco for 4 years now.... You could not imagine how she dances and how she transforms herself on the ¨tablao¨!! great pictures! and good for you doing something new and exciting!
ReplyDeleteoo! I would love to see pics of your daughter dancing!
DeleteBeautiful pictures!! My daughter wants to go to a ballet class... But we have to wait until she's at least 4years old!
ReplyDeleteLoved the lead photo on Facebook and loving it all over again on your blog. That you took it without flash is amazing, and something I'd love to learn how to do. I think post production could make this image into an absolute stunner, and look forward to seeing a before and after. What a wonderful dance group to belong to.
ReplyDeleteFlamenco is not easy to learn. But it is fun if you let go!
DeleteGreat photos... love the colors :)
ReplyDeleteYou do a great job on or off stage Jill!!xxx
ReplyDeleteFabulous shot!
ReplyDeleteThis first pic is stunning!!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos Jill
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful shots! I love how you captured the movement and energy in the dancing... I've only seen one live flamenco performance (in Puerto Rico many years ago), but would love to go another one. Enjoy your classes, perhaps we'll see you in the next set ;)
ReplyDeleteIt is lovely that you can share flamenco with your daughter-in-law. I watched Flamenco in Sevilla in Spain on a very hot night. The sole female dancer put her heart and soul into the performance and I was worried she might collapse from heat exhaustion. The performance only lasted 30 minutes but it was fantastic - as was the clapping and vocalising that the two male performer's provided.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderfully dramatic dance the flamenco is. I admire you for having a go at this. I've always wanted to learn Latin Dancing but I feel I'm a little too old! Great photos Jill!
ReplyDeleteHi Kathy, it certainly is not easy to learn those tricky steps. Hopefully one day it will "click" into place for me! I wish I had started years ago, and not at my age now! Oh well, better late than never!
DeleteYou've done a wonderful job capturing the motion and excitement of the dance. I really like the dramatic makeup, too. What a lovely activity to share with your daughter-in-law. Whenever you do a post on flamenco dancing, I always wish that I knew how to do it. You've just inspired me to start looking around for a local studio. I'm probably too busy to start lessons now, but I can perhaps at least attend some shows.
ReplyDeleteIt Is fantastic to watch - so much passion! Perhaps you can go to our Facebook page and "like" us!
DeleteWonderful shots! Olé!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful shots, Jill. Dance is never easy to capture. Thanks for linking up this week. #TPThursday
ReplyDeleteFantastic shots! I have two left feet (although dance partners actually think it's more) so I REALLY admire people who can get it right!
