Continuing my 52-2 project

My regular readers may remember that in 2014 I completed a 365 project - one photo a day for a year. If you go to the link you can see my 2014 year in pictures - 365 project  It was a huge undertaking, but I found it hard to stop when the year ended so I embarked on a new project - 52-2. This is a project conducted through the Western Australian Photographic Federation and is encouraged by our local Photography Group of Bunbury. You can read more about it here - WAPF - 52-2 project

The brief for the project is to take two photos a week - one colour and one mono for 52 weeks. It is actually a great way to get into the habit of experimenting with mono images. I introduced my project to you on a blog post in early February - A new photography project for 2015 and I thought today I would bring you an update

PS - I did finish this project - and printed a book at the end - for some reason I haven't shared with you.  Sorry!

Please click on "read more" to keep seeing and reading more

But first there is one thing about mono images I thought I would mention here. You can take mono images "in camera" but then they will always be mono. Whereas if you take them in colour you can convert them to mono in post processing, and you will still have the original colour image as well.
Also mono is not just black and white. Mono can be shades of the same colour - ie yellow for instance! The trick is to convert to B&W in post-processing and then slide back in the predominant colour.

Some of these images you may have seen before on my posts.

Below you can see - February -
bush fire ravaged land, a beautiful frangipani flower in my garden,  grapes ready for the wine harvest pick, the Busselton around the jetty swim, ingredients ready for breakfast, eggs in an old baking mould, arches at the University of Western Australia and flamenco dancers from Sol y Sombra at the Bunbury Multicultural Festival.

March - so far -
coffee at the Goose Restaurant in Busselton, at a flamenco dancing workshop, those lovely hydrangeas from my post last week, Laksa, and a geometric pattern.

This geometric pattern was a result of me playing around for a photography group topic - shapes. Patterns and shapes are all around us. You can create all sorts of interesting images from shapes. Can you guess what this is?
Update Friday 27 March - I am very happy to say I was awarded a "silver" at the Bunbury Photography Group last night for this image.
Licorice Allsorts! yum! I love them! do you?

Shapes are all around us. This image I won  a "highly commended" award in the mono section of the photography group end of year awards last year.  Just a simple image of steps going up the Bunbury tower lookout which I took with my camera one lunch time last year.

Architecture in particular gives us opportunity for taking photos of shapes - look up!

Bunbury Tower

  4. This was a very ambitious project, Jill! Good for you in coming close to completing it! The licorice candy brought back memories to me, as it was my father's favorite candy.

  11. I love licorice allsorts, so I knew what they were straight away.
Architectural shapes make fabulous photos, I take quite a few myself.
I even have a circular staircase one from the lighthouse at fisherman's Wharf here in Adelaide.
I've never thought of taking them in mono.

  13. Hi Jill,

Your mosaics are always a pleasure to view, but today's treats are addictive! Frangipani flowers are one of my favourites for their sweet and fruity scent. I've tried several times to grow them in my front garden, but they just don't seem to thrive. It may be because of the high winds we get up here, at the top of the village, as we are exposed. Yours are beautiful!! Both licorice pics, the steps and the building, are also photos I stared at for a bit, (jaw still hurts), amazed at their texture, shape, and composition. Congrats on being awarded for your photography talent; your work is very inspiring!

Thanks so much for stopping by and also for visiting Poets United. I really appreciate it!:)) You are very sweet!

    Hugs,
    Poppy

  17. When I began my garden blog I considered myself a writer (and gardener) but quickly learned how important photography is to a blog. I am slowly learning, and it isn't all about f stops, but about framing and angles and light. Well, I guess light is about f stops. I really admired and enjoyed this post. A lot of information and inspiration to take in. And thanks for the pix of all sorts. I never knew what they were.

  18. I am just blown away by your talent Jill!! The photos are so beautiful. I am not near at your level, but I do think taking pictures has helped me to see the beauty, the patterns, the sweetness around me. To try to capture that is always fun.

  21. It's so nice to have a chance to visit your post. Family obligations have left me with reduced time lately! I enjoy all of your images but find myself drawn to the ones that 'speak' toe and my experience - perhaps it's easier, when life is in flux, to hang onto the sorts of things one has always loved - so..... The arches, the frangipani flower, the egg and the hydrangeas - beautiful!

    1. It was so lovely to visit you this week too. I see that life has had many dramatic turns. When my life was going through great changes last year I found great solace in being able to have my 365 project to take myself to another place from time to time. And my photos from last year certainly reflect last year! Take care and thank you for stopping by.

  22. I've always been a bit wary of monochrome because my photos and stories rely so much on colour - probably to hide defects in composition!!! I loved the allsorts B&W, but I only started salivating when I saw the colour photo!!!
