Went down to the beach to play one day.................

I recently found this peom in an old poetry book I found while packing up my mother-in-laws house. The book is called "The Charge of the Light Brigade and other story poems" (Scholastic Book Services, 1969)

I really liked the image it created of the little girls playing on the beach and the treasures they found...........and the innocence of childhood and carefree days on the beach.
ps - there are no capital letters because this is how it was printed in the book....

maggie and milly and molly and may

maggie and milly and molly and may
went down to the beach (to play one day)

and maggie discovered a shell that sang
so sweetly she couldn’t remember her troubles, and

milly befriended a stranded star
whose rays five languid fingers were;

and molly was chased by a horrible thing
which raced sideways while blowing bubbles; and

may came home with a smooth round stone
as small as a world and as large as alone.

For whatever we lose (like a you or a me)
It’s always ourselves we find in the sea

It is winter here in Australia, but the beach is so much a part of the culture of Australia it can be enjoyed any time of year in different ways.  Here is my mosaic I created from the poem - some photos are new from our recent weekend in Yallingup, and some are from my archives -  unfortunately I don't have a star fish...

I hope you enjoyed the poem and pictures. I look forward to hearing from you. I am linking up with Mosaic Monday at Little Red House. To see the work of Mary and other wonderful contributors, please click on the link here -  Mosaic Monday

Take care, have a wonderful week, and hug the ones you love.

  1. Love your mosaic!! What beauty there is at the beach. Really like the single shot with the grass in the forefront. One of our BnB guests, that lives on the east coast of Canada, said that our grasses blowing and swaying over the prairie landscape is the like an ocean in a different way..... There is beauty everywhere!

  2. Oh, I remeber the poem "The Charge of the Light Brigade" so well! Your photos are spectacular and I can't stop looking at them! The feather one is my favourite~~ It has been so warm here in mid winter in Cape Town that we have also been on the beach much more than ususal in winter!

  9. Beautiful mosaic. You're really good at these - it's not an art I've mastered. Well done! I might just have to order a print one day ;)
